Impress your guests with Dawa cocktail may be ordered

Dawa cocktail. PHOTO | COURTESY

Madaraka Day calls for a Kenyan cocktail, and none other is yet as noteworthy as the Dawa.

Inspired by Brazil’s national cocktail, the Caipirinha, it may have started at Carnivore Restaurant and spread to others around the country, sneaking its way into North and South Africa. Dawa is Swahili for medicine, perhaps stemming from the fact that it is potent enough to cure all your worries! It is both tart, sweet and utterly refreshing. Just be sure to have a designated driver if you order this when dining out. Otherwise, why not invite friends over and surprise them with a home made dawa.

Makes four glasses.

INGREDIENTS

  • 4 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 4 tablespoons honey
  • 8 ounces vodka
  • Crushed ice cubes
  • 4 whole limes, quartered, with skin on.

METHOD

  • Put the ice into a whisky tumbler then add the lime and sugar.
  • Muddle just enough to release the lime juice without mashing the peel as this will release a bitter flavour.
  • Pour in the vodka.
  • Coat a honey stick with the honey and use this to stir the drink. Serve!
