More than 1,600 foreign medical practitioners working in Kenya will know their work permit status within the next three months as the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) conducts a comprehensive audit of all licensed health professionals.

The audit, which follows a directive by Cabinet Secretary for Health, Aden Duale, is aimed at increasing transparency and addressing concerns about the licensing and eligibility of foreign practitioners. It comes in the wake of growing concerns about illegal organ transplant syndicates in Kenya, which have alarmed both the medical community and the general public.

KMPDC Chief Executive Officer David Kariuki said the audit is part of a wider strategy to ensure the highest standards of healthcare delivery and patient safety.

"In line with a directive from the Cabinet Secretary for Health, KMPDC is conducting a comprehensive audit of all foreign medical practitioners. Upon completion, the Council will release a detailed report within 90 day," said Dr Kariuki.

Foreign medical practitioners must meet several key requirements to practice in Kenya. These include holding a recognised medical degree (such as MBChB or equivalent) from an accredited institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools or recognised by the KMPDC.

They must also register with the KMPDC, pass a licensing examination, and obtain a valid work permit through their employer.

Compliance with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Act, 2019, and the Medical Practitioners and Dentists (Inspections and Licensing) Rules, 2022 is necessary to maintain the highest standards of medical practice.

In addition, they must be in good standing with the medical regulatory body in their home country and have relevant professional experience. They are required to comply with Kenyan laws and healthcare regulations, including ethical guidelines and patient safety protocols. Proficiency in English is also essential.
