Kenya will deploy an AI-driven platform that will collate information on pregnant women, mothers and newborns to help monitor care more effectively and identify issues earlier.
According to the Digital Health Agency (DHA), the platform will consolidate Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) information from hospital systems, community health records and reporting platforms. The platform will cover services, including antenatal care, childbirth, postnatal care, immunisation, family planning and maternal deaths.
“Facility electronic medical record (EMR) systems, donor reporting processes and community-facing communication channels operate largely in isolation, limiting real-time visibility for the DHA and its users, such as the Social Health Authority (SHA) and Kenya Medical Supplies Authority,” the DHA said.
“The DHA intends to commission a single AI-driven digital platform that addresses three RMNCAH priorities: facility-level data aggregation and clinical decision support; inbound and outbound care coordination for RMNCAH beneficiaries; and direct beneficiary engagement through a conversational digital channel.”
The system will enable officials to monitor key performance indicators such as antenatal care, skilled deliveries and maternal and newborn deaths in one place.
It will also help doctors and nurses record information during consultations, reducing the amount of paperwork they have to complete while providing them with access to guidance on managing different conditions.
The agency intends to use information on deaths to identify issues at specific hospitals, with particular medicines or with certain health professionals. This is expected to enable authorities investigate problems earlier and take action.
