KCB Group has appointed Mark Mwongela Ngungi as the first group director of strategy and innovation, in a move that signals continued restructuring at the top leadership level.

Mr Ngungi joins the lender from PayPal where he was the regional director for enterprise sales and business development for Middle East and Africa, based in Singapore. He previously served as Pesapal CEO.

KCB said Mr Ngungi will serve in the group executive committee, reporting to the group CEO Paul Russo and spearheading the implementation of the group strategy and driving innovation across the business.

This marks the first time KCB is picking the head of strategy for the group, having traditionally operated with strategy directors across the subsidiaries.

The appointment of Mr Ngungi has come alongside several other changes in KCB senior management suite.

Peter Mwaura Kimani, who has been serving as the corporate communications manager, has been appointed as the head of corporate and stakeholder relations and will now be reporting to Mr Russo. Mr Kimani previously worked at the Nation Media Group.

The changes have also seen Judith Sidi Odhiambo picked as the head of sustainability and will be reporting to Mr Ngungi. She has been the head of corporate and regulatory affairs in the same institution.

“The changes are in line with our deliberate focus to build a critical mass of effective leaders to drive business growth and deliver on the Group’s ambitions, as we collectively build a people-driven, customer-focused organisation for the future,” said Mr Russo.

The changes add to three other leadership appointments that KCB made in July last year. It picked Andrew Lisero as the group director for audit, promoting him from the role of head of operations audit at KCB Bank.

The Group also appointed Faith Basiye as the group chief risk officer, taking over from John Mukulu who retired. Ms Basiye previously served as the head of forensics services at KCB Bank Kenya.

Another appointment was that of Charles Kipngetich Langat as the group director of shared services. He was previously the group internal auditor and director audit.
